When I view the entire original video the video plays. If I try to start watching it at any other point, the audio works fine, but the video does not show. Thus, when editing (if doing it by sound alone, as I am forced to) the video does not show at any point. :(

It is likely that the original video has too few key frames to play from the middle. You can solve this problem by converting the video to AVI using the built-in Media Converter (on the Tools menu) before editing it. This is explained here: http://www.deskshare.com/help/vem/DMC.aspxThe AVI files created by Media Converter have a key frame every 8 frames, and should be easy to edit.
