After downloading an AVI file of 710mb I used Video Edit Magic to delete 10mb from the file so it would fit on a disc yet all the compressors I've used either make the file much larger or the quality is very poor. How do I improve the quality?

How is the quality of the file when you make movie in uncompressed AVI?
If the quality of the uncompressed file is good then the problem is with the selected video compressor. Here are a few things that you can try:
1. If you know the video compressor of the original file then you can select that compressor while making the movie.
2. Select a quality setting between 80 to 90%.
3. Try making movie using the Microsoft MPEG 4 video compressor. This gives high quality compressions.
You can select a part of the Timeline using the Selection Sliders and then make movie of the selected section only. This will help you to experiment with different video compressors and settings quickly. You can also cancel the make movie process after a few seconds and test the created output file.
