Any way to customize the reader to get reads down to seconds rather than hours?

Providing an option to set the update setting to less than one hour generally increases the load on the various web server. We have received complaints from website providers regarding the amount of traffic generated by checking for updates every second. Therefore we have set the minimum to one hour.
