Applying transitions to many images

I can do a successful transition between two images (first image in video 1, second image in video 2 and transition overlapping both in the middle). Where I have problems is trying to then transition to a third image (put into video 1) with a transition in between. It doesn't seem to work correctly on the transition to the 3rd image (screen goes black when it hits the transition, even though it is overlapped with the image).

Does anyone have any advice?

To transition from a clip in the Video 2 track to a clip in the Video 1 track:

1. Right-click the transition and click Transition Settings
2. Check the "Swap Video Tracks for this Transition" option
