We have received questions from users of Active Web Reader about displaying characters like è, é, and ö, which are not present in the standard English alphabet.

For RSS feeds (like most blogs), which characters are shown is controlled by the XML file that describes the feed. This is created by the blog author (or the blog software), not at DeskShare. If it contains this:

[?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?]

as its opening tag, the "encoding" parameter will instruct Active Web Reader to display the accented and other non-English characters normally. If a blog is displaying incorrectly, you can notify the blog author about the problem.

We'd like to thank Andrew, an Active Web Reader user, for help in analyzing this.
