Probably because I'm doing something wrong.

I want to record the audio track from an old film. I'm playing the film with WMP and 'recording' it via MSR which is creating a WMA file. But when I play it back...silence..

Any help appreciated

To record audio from Windows Media Player, click the Tune Audio button on the My Screen Recorder tool bar. Click Next, Next again, and on the "Select Audio Recording Device" screen select Record from speakers. Click Next, choose to select the line for speaker recording, and choose "Wave Out Mix". Click Next and then Finish.

Now, My Screen Recorder will record the audio played by Windows Media Player.
