  WebCam Monitor v4.30

  View your camera remotely

You have a camera and want to do video surveillance of your property, but from your office or a comfortable location.  You just need four things, a camera, your PC, Webcam Monitor and an Internet connection.  The remote monitoring feature in WebCam Monitor is an ideal solution, as it gives you the ability to keep an eye on things from anywhere in the world.  All you need to do is to connect your camera to your PC, start remote monitoring in WebCam Monitor, and stay informed of all activities as and when they happen.

Using WebCam Monitor, you can remotely view the activity from your camera in three different ways.  You can watch a live feed from your webcam, use FTP to view uploaded video recordings and snaps on your website, or receive email with embedded snaps of the activity sent by WebCam Monitor.

Let us look at each of the three different ways to turn your PC and camera into a remote video surveillance system.

  1. Live streaming:
In live streaming the webcam connected to your PC uses the Internet to send video live to you.  If you have the Internet bandwidth, this is the best way to monitor the action live.

  Preparing for live streaming
First, you need to have a static IP address on the PC where the camera is connected.  An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned for identification and communication to each computer in a network.  A Static IP address does not change.  In contrast, a dynamic IP address can change frequently.  A dynamic IP address may work temporarily.

Live streaming will not work on non routable IP addresses.  A non routable IP address starts with 192.x.x.x.  If you are not sure what type of IP address you have, you need to find out from your ISP or a network professional.

Configuring live streaming in WebCam Monitor
WebCam Monitor provides live streaming using Windows Media Streaming Technology.  The first step is to configure WebCam Monitor for live streaming:

1. On the Tools menu, click on Options.

WebCam Monitor - Monitor Menu

2. On the Options window, select the Remote Monitoring tab.
3. Click on the Configure button under the Streaming option.  The Live Streaming Settings dialog opens.

WebCam Monitor - Streaming Settings

4. Specify a Port number to which you or your viewers can connect to and view the live video.  If 0 is specified then WebCam Monitor will automatically select a port number.
5. Specify the number of viewers that can connect simultaneously.
6. Select a Profile depending on the Internet connection speed available to your audience.
7. Click OK.
8. If monitoring is in progress, then in the Monitor menu, click on Stop Monitoring.  If a device is already in use, then stop its preview by clicking on Stop Preview in the Monitor menu.
9. On the File menu, click on Add Camera Wizard and select the required video device from the list.
10. On the Monitor menu, click Start Monitoring with Alerts if you want WebCam Monitor to automatically start detecting Motion/Noise.
11. On the Tools menu, click Start Streaming to start the streaming.

  2. Watching live video from a remote location
You just need a web browser and an Internet connection to watch a video live from a remote location.

1. Open the web browser.  If you have configured remote monitoring for Port 0 then in the address bar, enter mms:// IP address of PC with the webcam :80 Otherwise please specify the port number you have configured after the IP address.

2. Hit Enter. The media player will be launched and you will start receiving a live feed after some initial delay for buffering.

If you want your family and friends to watch the live feed, inform them of your IP address and the port (if you have specified one) to which they can connect to.

  3. Upload Video/ Audio and snaps to a FTP Server:
With the Upload feature, you can upload video recordings and snaps to a FTP server whenever noise or motion is detected or at regular time intervals.  Webcam Monitor gives you the ability to upload recorded videos/audios and snaps taken by your webcam to a FTP server for easy storage, maintenance and analysis.  Recordings can be done and uploaded periodically or when motion and noise is detected.

To upload media files to a FTP server:

1. If Monitoring is in progress then on the Monitor menu, click Stop Monitoring.
2. On the Tools menu, click Options.  Select Remote Monitoring > Upload.

WebCam Monitor - Server Settings Tab

3. Specify the details of the FTP server to which you are going to upload.
4. Check 'Enable Automatic Upload’.
5. To upload at periodic time intervals, select After Every and then specify the interval in Hours and Minutes.
6. To upload files whenever motion or noise is detected, select the Immediately after media file creation option.
7. Select the type of files you want to upload from Upload What.
8. If you want to upload the last snap file taken by the Take Snaps alert continuously as the same file on the FTP server then select Overwrite Snap File with the name.  Specify the file name that you want to overwrite.  This option is available only when Snaps is selected from Upload What.
9. Click OK.

Remote monitoring through uploading of files can also be used to setup a web site with a web page that displays a snap.  Configure WebCam Monitor on a remote computer to update the snap and upload it to your web server.

  Receive email notification:
The email notification alert sends an email to you containing a snap of the event which triggered the alert.

The E-mail Notification alert lets you send e-mails with an embedded snap on Motion and Noise detection or periodically.  This is a very powerful tool which allows you to remotely monitor at your own leisure and convenience.

  To configure the email notification:

1. Under Run Alerts, select the option After every, if you want email at regular time intervals.  If you want to receive emails whenever motion or noise is detected, then select the When motion or noise is detected option.
2. Check the E-mail Notification option from the list of available alerts.  Click on Configure to open the settings window.
3. Specify your e-mail address in the From field.  Specify the e-mail address of the recipient in the To field.  If you also want to include a snap with the e-mail, check the Include JPEG snaps with email option.  If you don’t want attached snaps, then you will be simply notified via email that an alert was triggered.
4. Click OK.

Now, that you have configured this alert you can start monitoring by clicking on the Start Monitoring with Alerts button on the main screen.

Remote monitoring is an easy, convenient and effective tool for staying informed all the time.  Use Remote Monitoring in WebCam Monitor to keep an eye on your home or business anytime and from anywhere.
