Is there a way to set the file preferences? I'd like the program to open and save to a drive and folder other than the default location.

Video Edit Magic does not have a separate preferences section where you can specify the default folders. However, if you open or save to a particular folder then it will remember that folder the next time you use Video Edit Magic. This is also true for many other settings like layouts, project and make movie folders.
