Preparing for Capture

Make sure that your external device is connected to your PC, that it's correctly configured, and that other applications are not using the device, then select Capture from the Tools Menu or use the shortcut key F3.  The capture utility will detect your default external device and will automatically try to use it.

After the capture utility is invoked:

  • Choose Capture > Preview to enable live preview, if the preview is not already enabled.
  • Select Capture > Video and/or Capture > Audio.  This will determine if video or audio or both are to be captured.
  • Select Synchronize > Video to Audio, Synchronize > Audio to Video or Synchronize > None.  This will determine the master stream.  Audio streams can be typically recorded faster than Video streams.  Therefore, the default setting is to Synchronize Video to Audio that designates the Audio stream as master.  However, if Video is synchronized to audio then during capture, some video frames may be dropped resulting in a choppy video.  If this is not desired then Synchronize > Audio to Video could be a better option provided that audio is not so important.  If the audio to be captured is just music that does not requires to be synchronized to video, then the best option is to select Synchronize > None.
  • Choose File > Set Capture File and specify the capture file by browsing for it.  You will also be asked for the capture file when you start capturing.  To avoid this check the option "Do not show this box when I start capturing".  After the capture starts, you will have to manually stop the capture.  You may also configure the capture to stop automatically after certain time by selecting Stop capture after...  and by specifying the time in seconds.
  • You may also configure video properties, audio properties and camera properties by selecting Tools > Video Settings, Tools > Camera Settings, Tools > Audio Settings and/or Tools > Audio Format

Now that you have prepared the capture utility for capture, you are ready to start capturing.
