Adding RSS feeds

What is an RSS feed?

An RSS feed is a distributing link to content in your web site that you'd like others to see and use.  Any content that can be broken down into discrete items like Blogs, Articles, Forums, Schedules, Discounts/Specials, News and Product updates etc can be effectively distributed using RSS feeds.

Benefits of having RSS feeds on your website

Providing RSS feeds is an easy way to keep your existing and potential customers up to date on your website without them visiting regularly.  It streamlines communication between publishers and readers.

What is Active Web Reader?

Active Web Reader is an RSS reader/aggregator.  It is a feature rich software that enables users to read, organize, update, search for RSS feeds and browse Web pages.  To know more about the Active Web Reader, please visit http://www.deskshare.com/awr.aspx

Adding RSS Feeds to Customized Setup of Active Web Reader

Using this feature in the Customizer, you can Add RSS feeds which you want to embed with the Active Web Reader.  Whenever the customized setup is run, the feeds are automatically preloaded during the installation.  This saves Web publishers and distributors the trouble of convincing users to add their RSS feeds to their RSS readers.  They can simply ask users to download the Customized setup of Active Web Reader, with their feeds embedded.

To add RSS feeds:

  1. Run the Active Web Reader Customizer, the Customizer Wizard is launched.  The Wizard guides you through the process of preparing a customized setup of Active Web Reader.
  2. In Step 2 of the Wizard, you are prompted to Add RSS feeds to the Customized setup.
  3. Click on Add RSS , and specify the URL of the feed you want to add to the list.  The feeds you add would be available in the Active Web Reader when it is installed.
  4. By default the RSS feeds will be added into the "My Feeds" folder or currently selected folder that was created when an OPML file was imported.

Importing RSS feeds from an OPML file:

If you have a long list of RSS feeds stored in an OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) file, you can import the list directly in the following manner:

  1. In Step 2 of the Wizard, click on the Import OPML button.
  2. Navigate to the location where the OPML file is saved by clicking on the Browse button.  Click on Open.
  3. Click on Import to list the feeds in the Import feeds window.  The feeds would be displayed under Imported feeds.
  4. You can choose to include/exclude a feed by selecting/ deselecting the checkbox present adjacent to the feed.  Click on Add to add the selected feeds to the feed list and to return to the Add feeds window.
  5. Active Web Reader Customizer will add the feeds imported from the OPML under a new folder.  The folder name will be the title of the OPML.  If the title is missing then the OPML file name will be used as a folder name.

To rename a Folder:

  1. Click on the Rename button.
  2. Specify the new name for the folder.
  3. Click OK.

EXAMPLE:

To add the RSS feed present at cnn.com for Top Stories, in Step2 click Add, and enter http://rss.cnn.com/rss/cnn_topstories.rss
This feed would be automatically embedded in the AWR.
