Site Translator : Getting Started with Translation

Getting Started with Translation

The previous sections of this User Guide dealt with understanding the requirements, interface and main features of Site Translator.  This section outlines the process of language translation.

The two main aspects of the site translator are:

Before you actually start the process of translation you need to know certain things:

Whether you opt for Site Translation or URL Translation, you need an Internet connection.  The translation is done with the help of a remote language or translation server and Site Translator needs to connect to the server.  For URL translation, Internet access is required to browse for the website before it can be translated.

You cannot translate a page that is the result of a translation without saving it first.  Site Translator will only translate either web pages from the Internet or files on a local hard drive.

To configure General Settings, open the Options menu and click General Setting.  It has the following items:

Encoding

You can select either UTF-8 or Unicode as the encoding format.  The encoding is in Unicode by default.  You must choose an encoding standard accepted by the site which you want to translate.

Translation file name (applied to site translation only)

By default, the Append language prefix to file names option is selected and a prefix is added to signify the language they are translated to.  For instance, if a file named "somebasics" is translated to German, the prefix "de_" is added to original file name and the name of the translated file is "de_somebasics".

The Use original name for converted file option keeps the name of the translated file same as the source file.  A folder with the name of the translated language is created within the destination folder.  If the the file "mysite" is translated in Spanish, a folder called "Spanish" will be created in the destination folder containing the translated file called "mysite".

Minimize to System Tray

If you check this option, Site Translator will icon will be placed in the System Tray of your PC when you minimize it.  It will not appear in the Task Bar.

Block Pop-ups

Sometimes, unwanted advertisements and sites appear as Pop-ups while you are browsing.  You can check this option to block them.

The translation process is carried out for standard phrases and slang cannot be translated.
