Selecting a Video Compressor

A video compressor (or video codec) affects the size and quality of video in screen recordings.  Some (older) video compressors like Microsoft Video 1, Microsoft RLE and Cinepak Codec by Radius come with Windows.  These compressors produce good quality screen recordings and have decent compressions.  The latest compressors like Microsoft MPEG 4 Versions 1, 2, 3 produce good quality screen recording and have very high compressions.  These compressors must be installed separately.  Some compressors are customized for screen recordings.  These compressors take advantage of window properties and produce highly optimized screen recordings.

To select a video compressor from the ones available on your PC:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Settings.
  2. Select the AVI Video tab if not already selected.
  3. From the (Video) Compressor box, select an appropriate video compressor.
  4. Click About to know more about the selected compressor.
  5. Click Configure to change the selected compressor's properties.  This configuration is compressor dependent and varies from compressor to compressor.
  6. Change Video Quality if required.  The recording's file size can be significantly reduced by decreasing the quality of the video.
  7. Click OK
