My Screen Recorder:

Maximum Recording Time and Size

My Screen Recorder does not impose any limit on the amount of time for which you can create a screen recording.  The real limit depends on the space on hard drive.  Since My Screen Recorder creates screen recordings in AVI format, Windows imposes a limit of about 2 GB for AVI files.

My Screen Recorder employs segmentation to work around this limitation.  Whenever the recording file size in AVI exceeds ~1.9 GB, a new file (segment) is automatically created.  This segment will again have a maximum size of ~1.9 GB, and if the recording continues beyond the segment size, further segmentation is carried out.

However, it is always a good idea to limit the file sizes for better utilization of the available storage space.  The factors that affect file size are:

  1. The duration of screen recordings.
  2. The frame rate of the recorded AVI files.
  3. The key frame rate of the recorded AVI files.
  4. Quality of the recorded AVI files.
  5. The video and audio compressor used.
  6. The height and width of the screen recordings.
  7. The computer display’s color depth.
  8. The amount of motion being recorded.

The default settings in My Screen Recorder are Frame Rate: 5 frames/second, Key Frame Rate: 80 frames and Quality: 75.  With these default settings, a recording of the entire desktop at 1024 x 768 pixels resolution can go up to 8 hours before reaching the maximum file size.

If you want to increase the recording duration then change one or more factors mentioned above.  If you do not require the audio then simply removing it can give you 20% more recording time.

Before carrying out a long duration screen recording, make sure that there is ample space for temporary files.  My Screen Recorder creates video and audio separately in the temporary folder you specify and then merges them.  To specify a temporary folder for saving your recordings, click on Settings under the Tools menu.  In the Settings window, select the General tab and specify the Temporary Folder by clicking on Browse.

While recording, if the temporary folder begins to run out of disk space, you are prompted to save your work.
